Everything is an argument in AP Lang class! Argumentation will dictate majority of your first quarter essay writing and will be important to know for the AP Lang exam in May. Therefore, this is very important skill you must learn. It is also an important type of essay to have for the future, for example it can be used when you are in college or if you choose a certain profession, such as a lawyer. In argumentation, you will be presented with a prompt in which the author has stated his/her argument, then you must either, defend (agree), challenge (disagree), or qualify the authors argument. When composing this thesis statement, it is important that you keep it short and sweet and to the point. Also, you must use outside sources as evidence to support your thesis, without straying from the topic. When searching for appropriate evidence, you can you any old reading materials or credible online sources, such as Washingtonpost.com. Ultimately, remember that we use argumentation on a daily basis, however in AP Lang class, you will be able to further develop these skills through debates, seminars, and of course, essay writing!
